Want to go somewhere but don’t know how? Here’s a quick summary of options and prices.
Coaches/buses depart from Ho Wah Genting Bus Terminal at the S.W. of Central Market.
Olympic market is just South of Olympic stadium. Taxis & pickups leave from the N.W corner of Central Market unless otherwise stated.
Boats leave from just South of the Japanese Bridge (Route 5).
Times are given for departure (taxis etc. often won’t go after this time). Journey time is in bold type. Prices are one-way, per seat. Hard haggling is required to get some of these prices, and they can fluctuate, so use them as a guide.
Siem Reap:
Express (rip-off) boat: 6:30-7am, $23 5hours Leaving from Phnom Penh port.
Taxi: 5am-2pm 35,000 riel, 4.5 hrs pickup or coach 16, 000 riel. 6hrs. The road is now great all the way. Boat tickets are way overpriced so take a taxi or bus. You see more of the Cambodian countryside.
Sihanoukville:
Coach: 730-130pm, 12,000 riel. 4hrs. Taxi: 5-3 pm. 10, 000 riel, & pickup: 6,000 riel, 3.5hrs. Train: 630 am, 6,500 riel, 12hrs.
Excellent road. Pickups may stop a few times on the way; the coach stops onece for refreshments. The train journey is idyllic if it is running but very sporadic no passenger car now. Views from the roof are stunning.
Koh Kong (Thai border):
Get to Sihanoukville, then get the express boat from the fishing port at 12pm. 600 baht. Then get a taxi or motorbike to the border (20baht sharing, 10 minutes). Now accessible by road. 400 baht a taxi seat from central market. 6-7 hours to the border!! The road has just been graded in places and is in relatively good shape. Bangkok here we come!
Vietnam Border:
Olympic market, 5-12pm. Taxi: 20,000 riel; pickup: 8,000 riel; Minibus: 15,000riel. 3.5hrs. Much improved road. Capitol Guesthouse does a bus ticket all the way to Saigon for $6 leaving at 6.45am. Or a bus then boat to Chao Doc for $6 at 8am.
Poipet (Thai border):
5-10am bus from $6 Taxi 40000 riel. 7-8 hrs. Road is not bad now after Battambang. See Battambang, then add a further two hours. From Siem Reap . Taxi 200 baht a seat. 3 hours. Road is pretty good. Pick ups and buses also run the route at lower prices but the bus service only runs from certain guesthousese.
Battabang:
Train: 6am, 6,500 riel 12hrs. Taxi: 5-11 am. 20,000 riel, pick up 8000 riel, Bus $4, from Capitol at 7am. 5hrs. Pretty good road for most of the journey. Again the train is the way to go if it is running and you have the time and enjoy scenery. A lot of short stops and you’re bound to meet some interesting people. The road is now very good!!!
Udong:
Bus: 7-2Pm 4500 riel. 1.5 hrs. Taxi: 5-3pm, 5000 riel. Pickup:3000 riel, 1hrs. Reasonable road.
Prey Veng:
6-12pm. Olympic Market. Taxi:10,000 riel. Minibus: 6,000 riel. Pickup: 4,000 riel. 3hrs. Good road.
Kampong Chhnang:
Bus: 7-2pm 6000 riel. 2.5. 5-3pm. Taxi: 6000 riel. Pickup 4000 riel. 2hrs. Good road.
Svay Rieng:
6-12pm. Olympic Market. Taxi: 15000 riel. Minibus: 7000 riel. Pickup 4000 riel. 3 hrs. Bad road.
Mondulkiri:
6-7am. 40000 riel/seat. 8hrs. It is now possible to get taxis from Central Market.
Stieybg Treng/Ratanakiri:
It is possible to go from Kratie to Stoeung Treng by bad road and river depending on the water level. The road from Stoeung Treng to Rattanakiri now is good. If you can afford it fly.
Kampot/Kep:
Taxi: 10000 riel. Pickup 5000 riel. 5-1 pm. Doeum Kor Market, Mao Tse Tung Blvd. (near the Inter-Con Hote). Minibus kep is the forgotten beach resort in Cambodia. And of course there is Bokor hill station to visit while you are there. A quiet and chilled out place to while away a few days.
Kampong Cham:
Taxi: 5-3 pm. 8000 riel. Pickup: 5000 riel. Minibus: 6000 riel 2 hrs. Excellent road. Slow boats go, journey time up to 7 hrs (see Siem Reap). Great scenery but get them coming back downstream as it’s faster and quieter as the engine is not labouring, making snoozing in your hammock easier.
Kratie:
Taxi: 25000 5hrs. Ho Wah Genting now do a bus service everyday. Trucks and taxis and buses go from Central market. The road is excellent now with the bit to Kampong Cham now being the worst. Boats go from Kampong Cham.
Palin:
Get to Battambang. Taxis leave from Phsar Le in Battabang, 6-2pm. Taxi 10000 riel. Pickup 5000 riel. Bad road. 4hrs. Bring back some rubies.
Kampong Thom:
6-12pm. Taxi: 6000 riel. Pickup: 4000 riel. 2 hrs. Good road.
