Angkor wat
How to go:
Location:
Description: There are few places anywhere on earth to match the splendour of Angkor Wat. The temple is one of the largest monuments to religion ever built and is truly one the wonders of the world. Believed to have been constructed as a temple and mausoleum for King Suryavarman II at the peak of the Khmer empire in the first half of the 12th century, Angkor Wat is probably the best-preserved of the Angkorean temples. As with other Angkorean temples and walled cities such as Angkor Thom, the central theme of Khmer architecture revolved around the idea of the temple-mountain.

By the time building on Angkor Wat was begun early in the 12th century, this had been elaborated to a central tower surrounded by four smaller towers. The central monument represents the mythical Mount Meru, the holy mountain at the centre of the universe, which was home to the Hindu god Vishnu. The five towers symbolise Mount Meru's five peaks. It is difficult to express in words the enormous scale of Angkor Wat, but it can be explained in part by a look at the dimensions of the complex. The temple is surrounded by a moat which makes the one around the Tower of London, built at roughly the same time, look like nothing more than a garden trench. At 190 metres wide and forming a rectangle measuring 1.5 km by 1.3 km, it is hard to imagine any attacking force overwhelming the defences.

But the moat was more than just a defensive bulwark, in line with the temple's Hindu origins it represented the oceans of the world. A rectangular wall measuring 1025 metres by 800 metres borders the inner edge of the moat. There is a gate in each side of the wall, but unusually for the mainly Hindu-influenced Angkorian temples, the main entrance faces west. This entrance is a richly decorated portico, 235 m wide with three gates. However, the temple's greatest sculptural treasure is its 2 km-long bas-reliefs around the walls of the outer gallery and the hundred figures of devatas and apsaras. This intricately carved gallery tells stories of the god Vishnu and of Suryavarman II's successes on the battlefield. The whole complex covers 81 hectares.

Preah Keo Morakot Temple
How to go:
Location:
Description: Wat Preah Keo Morakot had imitated the Cambodian architecture and been built since 1892 to 1902. Then, it was removed and reconstructed in 1962. Previously, the temple was called Wat Ubor Soth Rotana Ream Temple because the King of Cambodia used this temple for holding ceremonies to follow the eight silos on every Buddhist holiday. In addition, the relatives of Kings and officers had held other ceremonies abiding by Buddhism at this temple. But in this temple didn't have monks, only his Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk stays there during the time of being a priest for a term (in the year of pig AD 2490 Correspondence the 31st July 1947).

Therefore, it had a normal word called " Preah Vihear Preah Keo " is not " Wat " in the said word. When His Majesty celebrated any Buddhism celebration day, he would invite monks from another monastery in Phnom Penh City such as Wat Unaloam, Wat Botumvattey etc. Wat Preah Keo Morakot is located in the South of Royal palace surrounding by high long-buildings. Before constructing the Phnom Penh Bali school on the 19th December 1930, along these long building where we used to use as Bali class for monks who stayed in Pagodas in Phnom Penh and some provinces. On the wall of long buildings, there are ancient pictures, describing the Ramayana story for the beginning to end.

These pictures were painted from 1903-1904 under the leadship of Oknha Tepnimitt Theak with 40 Cambodian artists. The picture lasts from the southeastern long buildings to surround the whole long buildings in 642-meter length and 3-metre height. This means that we can see the pictures of the buildings by three times walking circle. The ancient pictures around the buildings are the Ramayana story showed the strange feature which is not etched or copied from Ramayanna of Indian because in the Ramayana we have seen some mysteries when we watch clearly, we will understand the story. Some parts of Ramayana story have been quoted to perform in Lo Kuon Khuol, Shadow Puppets or other figures and used as astrology to predict the human destiny.

Nowadays, the pictures are old and gradually disappeared because of natural disaster and the human damages. In 1985, the Royal Government of Cambodia collaborated with the Government of Poland had conducted a project for protecting and repairing the pictures, but the project lasted only five years because of the budget constrain. Now the Royal Government of Cambodia is finding means to maintain and repair this cultural heritage again. In front of the temple, there are two big stupas and a statue covered by roof: - The southern stupa is the stupa keeping cremated ash of Preah Bat Ang Duong and was constructed on Friday 11 Koet, Khe Pro Kun in the year of goat AD 2450 correspondence to 13 March 1908 (who is a grand grandfather of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanuok).

- The northern stupa is the stupa keeping cremated ash of Preah Bat Norodom and was constructed on Friday in the year of goat AD 2450 correspondence to 13 March 1908 (who is a grand-grand grandfather of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanuok). A statue on a white horse is the statue of Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom constructed in 1875, which is a keepsake from the King of Napoleon III of France and kept in front of the temple in 1892, but it had no roof. Until 1953 when Samdech, the president of state arranged the crusade to claim for independence from French colony, he prayed for success in front of this statue. After success in claiming for independence from the colony, he built the roof as the compensation to the sacred power of Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom there.

The temple made of wood and brick, built in the reign of Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom, and held the festival of Bonh Chos Sey Ma Chhlong on the 5 February 1903. Then the temple was ruined and required repairing in 1962 by the thought of Samdech Preah Moha Ksat Yani Kosomak Neary Rath, the queen under the highest leading of Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk. This old temple was removed and re-constructed from reinforced concrete with remaining the ancient architectural style; the floor made of silver and the column stuck by Thmor Keo imported from Italy.

The temple is called Preah Vihea Preah Keo Marakot, which take the name of a Buddhist statue inside made of precious gem considered as "Keo Morakot ". But the European called the temple “Silver Temple” because it is subject to the floor in the whole temple made of 5,329 pure silver tiles; each silver tile weighted 1.125 Kg. In the temple, there are 1,650 artifacts made of gold, silver and bronze with diamonds (most of them are statues). All of these artifacts are offered by the King, the Royal Families, officers and people to Preah Keo Morakot in wishing for happiness, peace, prosperity in this world and next world, and for keeping as the cultural heritage for the next generation. In front of the Bos Bok Thom, there is a big standing Buddhist statue made of gold weighted 90 kg (included support and above umbrella) with 2,086 multi-diamonds. The biggest diamond at the crown has a size of 25 Li and the diamond on Preah Sorong has a size of 20 Li.

This Buddhist statue made in 1904 by Preah Bat Samdech Preah Sisowath who abided by the left word of Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom before he died. The left word said that ”after his cremation must get that gold casket to melt for making a Buddhist statue representing Preah Srey Araya Metrey”. After that, Preah Bat Samdech Preah Sisowath organized a construction of this Buddhist statue to dedicate the offer to Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom in achieving Preah Srey Araya Metrey in the year of Buddhist era in 5,000 and named this Buddhist statue “Preah Chin Rang Sey Reach Chik Norodom”. - At the Bos Bok, Preah Keo Morakot is the main object in calling this temple. - In a small glass cabinet, there is the cremated ash of His Majesty brought from Sri Lanka by Samdech Preah Song Kariech Levy Em who stayed at Wat Lang Ka pagoda, Phnom Penh in 1956. - In the next cabinet, there is the gift offered by Samdech Preah Ksat Trey Yani Sisowath Kosomak Neary Rath, the queen in 1969. The gift is the golden Buddhist statue. - The dragon headed Buddhist statue represented the Buddha who stayed on Plur Sras Mochak Linti at that time. - The objects contain in other cabinets are the remembrance and decoration stuff for various Royal ceremonial and religious celebrations. - At the southern part of the temples, there are: - Keung Preah Bat is a place where kept the footprints of the four Buddhists, who have already achieved the enlightenment, namely: Kok San Thor, Nea Kak Mono, Kas Sabor and Sam Monak Kodom.

Other Buddhists who have not yet achieved the enlightenment included Preah Srey Araya Metrey who has been believed that he survived the human being in the future. - Mountain of Kharn Mali Nea Tip Tit Key Las or Mun Dup is the invented mountain representing the mountain of Key Las where the Buddhist steps on the stone to make his footprint. At the top of the mountain, there are monuments containing Buddhist footprint, and 108 small statues describing the 108 Mong Kol of birth and death of the Buddhist before he achieved the enlightenment to become the Preah Sama Samput. - The tower of Kun Theak Bopha was build in 1960 for containing the cremated ash of Preah Ang Mochas Ksat Trey Norodom Kun Theak Bopha who is a daughter of Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk, she died of illness since she was four years old.

This tower imitated the ancient temple abiding by the style of Banteay Srey. - Monti Sar Thom or Thomak Sala is the praying place - Stupa of Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sora Mrith built in 1960, is the father of Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk. - The West is the bell hall for signs to open and close the door of Preah Keo Morakot temple during the big ceremonies. - The North is the Mun Dup where Preah Tray Bey Dok books are kept. - Preah Tray Bey Dok or Pro Chum Ney Lo Ey Bey = the meeting of Preah Thom Vi Ney, the Buddhist rules sharing into three parts: 1- Vi Ney Bey Dok = (is the advice to notification and permission). 2- So Ta Nak Bey Dok = (is the advice to showing wrong and right, good and bad; but it is not allowed as Vi Ney Bey Dok). 3- Ak Phi Thomak Bey Dok = (is the explanation to mind, Chet Set, body and nirvana; It is not allowed either). Man-Made Resort Of Teuk Chha
How to go:
Location:
Description: Next to the temple, there is a canal existing since the ancient time. The canal has water all year round, either dry or raing seasons; water which is clear and non-stopped flowing which leads to attracting tourists to enjoy it happily. On either side of the clear-water canal, there are plants and trees growing; but now these plants and trees have been cut off to make a big plain where the wast water spreads out at the rock temple. In order to take advantage from the canal, a dam has been constructed to provide water to big rice fields in Prey Chhor District, Kampong Cham Pronvice and in Ba Ray District, Kampon Thom province.

Because the area is the cool place with great quantity of water and cool shadow from the trees that are growing around the ancient temple, these can sometime attract tourists to visit and enjoy during their holiday leading to be well known. Nowadays, the ancient pond, which we described as the achievement of Dr. Chung Kheal is the wast-water pond located in front of the dam that has been just constructed recently.

The canal has water flowing from above and has source at the North in Kampong Cham province; the water flows from the North to the East, when touching a side of the temple, it flows down into a big slit. From the ancient time, the slit has been full of water; but there are small currents of water shared from the slit, then flow into rice fields of the surrounding villages such as Kroch village in Sre Chhor District as well. Because the canal is old, the Ministry of Agriculture has organized a dam for stocking water in order to accelerate the water flow of the canal to thousand Hectars of rice fields in districts of Prey Chhor and Ba Ray.

The canal of Teuk Chha has corner where they can enjoy swimming; if someone like swimming in the shallow water, he/she can swim in the old canal, North of the dam because the bottom of the old canal has four-meter or five-meter width. The clear water, we can see its bottom with flock of small fish swimming in reverse direction to the water flow. If some one like swimming in deep water, he can swim in a wast water, South of the dam. Around the Slit of the canal bank, there is a high tree which provide shelter to tourists and birds. The water surface of Teuk Chha has appoximate 3-square kilometre size filled by nearly 10 sources at the Northeast Mountain and plateau called “Kbal Teuk”.

The tank of stocked water has appoximately more than two-metre depth and pours to three accesses: two accesses via the dam can be closed and opened, and another one is the 10-meter Slit, North of the dam. The first dam is opened every day; the water flows down sounding as water fall; this can attract tourists to enjoy swimming. The second dam is opened during the festival days sometime; the water flow is not strong.

The city was developed as the beautiful seaside tourist resort in 60th decade during the time of Sang Kum Reas Ni Yum. The name “Kep” is taken from French word “Le Cap” means peninsular. The story related to the name of Kep said that there was a king named Sa Kor Reach who had the mighty spell. He put the sleeping spell to a commander at Ang Kor Thum, then stole the commander’s white horse and fled together with his troop to the southwestern seaside. When he took a rest at the seaside, he was approached by the commander’s troops who had chased him from behind.

Suddenly, he got on the horseback; the horse jumped up, and mad him falls down with the horseseat. Then, he got on the horseback again and fled away without picking up the horseseat because the comander’s troops nearly approached him. So that, we called the area “Kep Seh” means “the horseseat”; then we only called “Kep” until now. Kep is a small city rich in fresh seafood like crab, snail and cuttlefish. So that we call the island “Koh Rum Say”, after that we call “Koh Ton Say” until now.Koh Ton Say has two-square kilometer landarea. Khmer New Year
In ancient countries of Chompou Tvip (the central continent of the seven continents surrounding Mount Meru) the elder people adopted the Khmer New Year's date in Khè Mikasè (January), i.e. the early year. According to the lunar calendar, they formerly chose three seasons including Heman Radov or winter, Kimha Radov ir hot season and Vasan Radov or rainy season.

Since Chol Sakarach (Lesser Era) they have formally adopted the solar calendar and held the Khmer New Year Festival in Khè Chèt (fifth month) that is a free time from their farming. Four main seasons in the solar calendar contain winter, spring, summer and autumn.

The Khmer people have adopted the fifth solar month, known as Khè Chèt, to celebrate their New Year festival. Usually, according to the solar calendar, the Khmer New Year falls on the 13th of April although sometimes it falls on the 14th of April.

The auspicious occasion of the Khmer New Year is detailed in the astrological almanac and extends over three days. The first day is known as Maha Sangkran or "Great Almanac Day", the second day is called Veara Vanabath or "Worshipping Day", and the third day is known as Veara Leung Sak or "Rank and Promotion Day". Of the three days Veara Leung Sak is considered the most auspicious.

The history of the Khmer New Year is closely connected to the seven signs of the zodiac for the week. The legend of the New Year is detailed in the Almanac which says: In ancient, happier times, a young man by the name of Thoamabal, the son of a tycoon, had an extensive knowledge of three Vedas (ancient books on Hinduism) by the age of seven. Thoamabal's father built a temple under the spread of a large Chrey tree (a fig tree) on the banks of a river that was home to many species of birds. He had an innate ability that enabled him to understand the languages of birds. He had an innate ability that enabled him to understand the languages of birds.

Thoamabal's attributes allowed him to become a layman in charge of religious ceremonies for all classes of people. Upon hearing this news another religious leader Kabel Maha Prohm, decided to challenge Thoamabal with tree riddles. He vowed that if Thaomabal could successfully answer the riddles he, Kabel Maha Prohm, would be beheaded; however if Thoamabal could not answer the riddles correctly then it would be Thoamabal who would be beheaded. Thoamabal insisted on having seven days to answer the puzzling enigma until Kabel Maha Prohm agreed.

For six days Thoamabal could not solve the problems and knew that he faced the prospect of being killed by Kabel Maha Prohm the next morning. He therefore decided ton hide himself and let his life fade away by natural causes. He hid himself beneath a pair of sugar palm trees in which a pair of eagles were nesting, that night Thoamabal overheard the eagles talking.

The female asked, "What will we eat tomorrow morning?" The male eagle replied, "We will eat the flesh of Thoamalobal because tomorrow he is going to be beheaded by Kabie Maha Prohm due to his inability to solve the riddles". The female then asked, "What are the riddles?" The male answered, "The first riddle is, where is luck to be found in the mornine?" Of course the answer is that luck is on the face because people always take water to wash their faces.

The second riddle asked, where is luck located at noon? It is on the chest because people always take water to wash their chests. Finally, the third question asked, where is luck located in the evening? The answer is that luck is on the feet because people always wash their feet in the evening. Thoamabal overheard all of the conversation and so happily returned to his temple. In the morning Kabel Maha Prohm came to ask Thoamabal if he could answer the three riddles.

Thoamabal successfully answered each of the riddles. Kabel Maha Prohm realixing he had failed, called his seven daughters, who were maids of Branma, to learn of his fate.Kabal Maha Prohm said, "Your father is foing to be beheaded in front of Thoamabal. If my head is set on the earth , if will set fire to Earth, if my head is thrown into the air, the rain will evaporate, if my head is thrown into the sea, the sea will dry up. Therefore I ask you, my seven daughters to get a holy metal tray on which to set your father's head". Having said this, he beheaded himself and his head was passed to Neang Toungsa, the eldest of his daughters. She placed her father's head on the holy tray and then proceeded to walk around Mount Meru for one hour, respectfully keeping the tray on her right hand. She then took the tray to the temporary sanctuary of Phnom Kailas. At Phnom Kailas, Preah Visakam created a hall where seven holy glasses (Pheakabatei Saphea) were set. The glasses were for use by angels during ceremonies. Each year the seven angels took turns to invoke the head of Kabel Maha Prohm to and complete a holy procession around Mount Meru. Following the holy procession the angels returned to their heaven.

The Seven Angels of the Almanac: If the annual procession talls on a Sunday then the day will be known as Toungsa. The other days are, Monday is Kooreak, Tuesday is called Reaksa, Wednesday is named Monday, Tuesday will be Kereney, Friday is known as Kemera and Saturday is Mahaotra.

During the Khmer New Year Festival, youths gather to play popular traditional games such as Chaol Chhoung (throwing a ball) and Bas Angkunh (throwing brown seeds). The youths are normally divided into female and male teams to play these games.

In some parts of Cambodia, e.g. Siem Reap and Battambang, they play a game known as the "Trot Dance". Trot performers dance and ask for alms from house to house in their village. A man will ride on a long curved stick with a deer's head on one side and with a cluster of grass on the other side like the deer's tail. Two men pretend to be hunters and are armed with a crossbow. When they receive alms they will donate it for the benefit of the local pagoda.

In villages along the Mekong Riverinthe province of Kandal women gather to rowboats in front of the pagodas. This action is believed to appease the crocodiles. This custom originated long ago when many crocodiles lived in the river. In some villages, people trample on effigies to appease the ghosts that live in the trees near the pagodas and ask for happiness in the coming year.

The Khmer people will gather together and visit pagodas and temples on the occasion of the Khmer New year. Each year many residents from other provinces visit Angkor Wat to worship to the powerful gods and trace their ancestors' heritage.
